Thriving through the change

A woman’s journey to empowerment at mid-life.

I am passionate about empowering women to reach their full potential, no matter what their age. Mid-life can be a time of particular challenges for us, including, but not limited to, the biological changes associated with menopause. But it is also an incredible opportunity for personal development, when we can reflect on what we need and want for ourselves in the next phase of our lives, and step in to the wisdom, creativity, and power of mature womanhood.

Why a workshop for women at mid-life?

Mid-life for women is not portrayed in an empowering way in the culture in which we currently live. Ageing is often viewed as an inevitable deterioration, and menopause, as the most obvious sign of mid-life for women, is alternately feared, denigrated, medicalised, laughed at, or ignored. When we hear the word the chances are that we might equate it solely with unpleasant physical symptoms, either because we have already experienced these, or because we are afraid that we will. We might feel sadness at mid-life at the ending of our child-bearing potential, or anxiety about getting older in general and what that means to our value as a woman in a culture where youth is all. This is a powerfully disempowering story for us as women at mid-life, and our stories matter much more than we may realise because they shape our experience of life.

But is this unhelpful story the only one available to us? What if there were other more resourceful stories; stories that empower rather than disempower us, that challenge the prevailing culture and transform our experience of mid-life. The reality is that this phase of our lives as women can be an extraordinary time for new beginnings and unlocking potential, and with the average life expectancy for women in the UK now over 80 there is a lot of life left for us to live and thrive!

With a better story we can use mid-life to;

  • Connect or (re-connect) us with what matters most to us
  • Explore new ways of being in the future to achieve healthy and fulfilling lives for ourselves and others
  • Apply the wisdom and experience we have gained over the years to embrace new opportunities
  • Teach by example the daughters, granddaughters, nieces and younger friends who follow us to have a different understanding of what mid-life means to us all

What will this workshop cover?

This one day workshop is a day out of your ordinary life just for you! It aims to give you a safe space to help you create an alternative story for your mid-life development, using an approach that combines scientific knowledge with the wisdom of the arts and humanities. With a mixture of information sharing and interactive exercises we will cover;

  • How our experience of mid-life is influenced by our beliefs, our lifestyle, and the culture in which we live, and how an awareness of these influences gives us more choices and helps us understand ageing in a healthier and more helpful way.
  • How to navigate the emotional challenges of mid-life in a healthy way, including some techniques to use to reduce anxiety and increase clarity of thought
  • Understanding your own body and brain and how they change (sometimes in surprising ways) at mid-life
  • The little known and empowering theory about why menopause occurs at all (not just how it occurs)
  • The powerful role of older women in human history; what myths and stories can teach us about this and how to reconnect with that power
  • Honouring our lives to this point; an appreciative enquiry into the learning, experiences and skills we have gathered
  • Using mid-life to re-connect with what really matters to us; to our life's meaning and purpose
  • Re-imagining our future selves beyond mid-life; changing our story and embracing and exploring the possibilities for the next chapters of our lives
  • The eternal importance of women coming together in friendship and mutual support.

You will leave the day with a totally new and empowering way to think about mid-life and about yourself, some new friends, and with a starting point for your new story. During the day you will also buddy up with another woman for some on-going co-coaching to keep you on track with your goals after the workshop.

Testimonials for ‘Thriving through the change’

“Excellent, warm, open, fun, enlightening, thought provoking, powerful course that women of all ages need to attend, fantastic. Highly recommended.”

“For all women of a "certain age", this course will provide you with a clear and insightful look into a fulfilling life ahead. All doubts and misgivings you may have about your current situation will be explained, given credence to, and ultimately dispelled. This course is an amazing opportunity to take stock, and find strength and enthusiasm for the years ahead as the amazing individual you already are, and find that your womanhood is your greatest asset.”

“This transformational workshop helped me see that the menopause is not about ending but transitioning into a new way of being. The whole day was extremely interesting and empowering. Jane led us sensitively and knowledgeably through the symptoms we may experience through to the fascinating history of why this change occurs at all, and onto what we can do to change our outlook. There was a caring and nurturing feel to the whole day yet it was one of the most empowering experiences I have ever had. I left feeling ready to embrace Act 3 of my life. The best is definitely yet to come!”

“This workshop is the first that I have come across that provides not only the scientific background behind menopause, why women will experience a range of symptoms etc. but also the emotional support to deal with these life changes and a range of resources to help in doing so. The workshop helps to reinvent the traditional image of menopause and sows the seeds for re-empowerment of women 'of a certain age', giving historical and factual context. It gives women the opportunity to come together and share their experiences in a safe environment and also in a pleasurable and easily accessible format.”
